Best Matchups for 9/29/06
Phillies at MarlinsThe Phillies, after playing a 14 inning game a few days ago, lost to the Nationals at 2:00 am eastern to fall to 2 games out in the wild card with 3 games remaining. They will send Jamie Moyer to the mound to try and save their playoff hopes. Moyer is 4-2 with a 4.27 ERA as a Philly. The Marlins will try to ruin the Phillies playoff hopes with Brian Moehler as their starter. Moehler is 7-10 with a 6.22 ERA this season.
Padres at Diamond-Backs
Only one more Phillies loss or Padres win is needed for the Padres to clinch a playoff spot. San Diego hopes to keep their momentum going today after a 12-4 victory at Chase Field last night. Today's pitching matchup is a re-run of September 19th. Clay Hensley is starting for the Padres with an 11-11 record and a 3.73 ERA. The D-Backs counter with Livan Hernandez, who the Padres had success against when they faced him on the 19th, scoring 4 in the 1st and adding another in the 5th and coasted to a win. Two Padres wins and a Dodgers loss, a Padres win and two Dodgers losses, 3 Padres wins, or 3 Dodgers losses would clinch the division for San Diego.
Royals at Tigers; White Sox at Twins
The Tigers AL Central lead has disappeared, but they have the rest of their games against the Royals, so Tigers fans shouldn't be too worried. The Twins will have to come up with a few big wins against the White Sox to stay in contention to win the division and avoid the Yankees.
The Royals pitcher will be Runelvys Hernandez (6-10, 6.38 ERA) and the Tigers pitcher will be Wilfredo Ledezma (3-3, 3.58 ERA). The Sox go to Minnesota looking for revenge with Freddy Garcia (16-9, 4.65 ERA) as their starter, while the Twins try to win the division with rookie Boof Bonser (7-5, 4.15 ERA)
