Best Matchups for 9/26/06

Padres vs. Cardinals

Both San Diego and St. Louis have narrow leads in their divisions that they are trying to hang onto over these last few games, and tonight, one of these teams may lose valuable ground in their division races. The Cardinals have been catching all the hot teams lately, leaving Houston only to end up playing the Padres, who currently have a 5 game winning streak. The Astros can not seem to lose right now, so this is a must-win for the Cards. They have the right pitcher out there, Chris Carpenter, who is competing for his 2nd consecutive Cy Young award with an ERA of 2.93 and a 15-7 record. The Padres counter with Woody Williams, who has made a nice comeback this year with a 3.53 ERA and 10-5 record. The key for the Padres is to contain Albert Pujols and Chris Duncan again. If they can do that, and score a few runs, they have the advantage.

Rangers vs. Angels; Athletics vs. Mariners

An Oakland win and an Angels loss would officially eliminate the Angels, which the A's have been close to doing since Saturday, but are struggling to lock up the division. The Mariners staged an amazing comeback yesterday, coming back from a 9-3 deficit to win 10-9, while the Angels won 8-3 against Texas to cut the A's lead to 5 games. Oakland has Rich Harden pitching for the second time since returning from the DL, while Seattle has Jake Woods pitching. Woods has been quite effective since moving to the starting rotation, with a 3.55 ERA in 6 starts. In the other matchup, Kelvim Escobar will try to keep the Angels in the race, but he and the Angels have to get through Robinson Tejada, who has been pitching great lately, to keep up with the A's.
