9/27/06 recap
American LeagueThe Tigers failed to put any much-needed space between them and the Twins as they were defeated by the Jays 7-4. Nate Robertson served up 4 home runs to the Jays, allowing a total of 6 earned runs, and could not even make it through the 5th inning. Bengie Molina set the Jays off to a good start with a 2 out, 2 run homer for the Toronto in the 1st. Nate Robertson allowed multiple runners on base in the 2nd and 3rd, but avoided allowing any more runs. He gave up 3 solo shots to 3 different batters over the next 2 innings, though, putting the Blue Jays ahead 6-0. Ted Lilly pitched well for Toronto to hold the lead and B.J. Ryan closed it out with his 36th save of the season.
The Twins had this chance to make up ground in the AL Central, but were defeated 6-4 by the Royals. Michael Cuddyer hit his 23rd home run of the season to bring the Twins within 2, but they could not complete the comeback.
The Rays stomped the Red Sox 11-0, including a 9 run 7th. The 8 runs Josh Beckett allowed in 6.2 innings sent his ERA up to 5.01. The same Beckett that the Red Sox traded Anibal Sanchez (pitched a no-hitter for the Marlins) and Hanley Ramirez (.292 average, 17 HR, 117 Runs, 51 Stolen Bases for the Marlins) to get. The Jays move back into 2nd place in the AL East because of the Sox lost. It is the 3rd day in a row that the two teams have swapped places in the division.
National League
The Cardinals finally got a much-needed win, thanks to Albert Pujols. Down by 1 with 2 outs and 2 on in the 8th, the Padres went to Rookie of the Year candidate (who the very same Red Sox also gave up for practically nothing), and Albert Pujols sent a 1-0 pitch into the upper-deck in left field to give the Cards a 4-2 lead that Adam Wainwright held in the 9th. It was the Cardinals 1st win in a week.
The Astros won’t let go, however. They won their 8th in a row in 15 innings, 7-6 over the Pirates, after overcoming a 6-1 deficit. Luke Scott, who won it for the Astros in St. Louis just a few days ago, singled in the tying run in the 9th, and catcher Brad Ausmus hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 15th to give the Astros the lead. Chris Sampson and Trevor Miller combined to pitch a scoreless bottom of the inning to give the Astros their 8th consecutive win.
The Phillies are still hanging on in the wild card, just one game behind the Dodgers, because of an 8-7 14 inning win over the Nationals. The Nationals were able to load the bases with no outs against Fabio Castro, and Ryan Church hit a sacrifice fly to make it a one run game. The next batter, Brian Schneider, however, grounded into a 4-6-3 double-play to end the game.
