This Date in Baseball History
-1890: On Labor Day at Washington Park, Brooklyn wins three games against Pittsburgh in the first tripleheader ever played.
-1906: In the longest game in American League history, Philadelphia beats the Red Sox in 24 innings, 4-1. Both starters went the entire game as A's pitcher Jack Coombs bests Boston's Joe Harris.
-1958: Cardinal pitcher Vinegar Bend Mizell beats the Reds,1-0. Mizell established a National League record by walking nine batters without giving up a run.
-2000: In an unusual play, the Orioles turns a triple play as shortstop Melvin Mora purposely lets a short fly drop in left field with runners at first and second. The runner at second is tagged out, the runner at first is out at second, and the batter, Sandy Alomar, thinking the infield-fly rule would be enforced does not go to first and is called automatically out for going back to dugout.
