This Date in Baseball History


-1926: Emil Lessen pitches and wins two complete games against the Red Sox, 6-1 and 5-1. The Indians' pitcher did not strike out any batters during his doubleheader sweep.

-1971: Phillies' pitcher Rick Wise hits two home runs, including a grand slam, leading to his 7-3 defeat of the Giants. Five weeks earlier, Wise also hit two homers against the Reds and no-hit the team on the same day, 4-0.

-1992: In a 22-2 rout, the Blue Jays pitching staff gives up 31 hits, 22 of which are singles, to help the Brewers set an American League record.

-1999: The Red Sox defeat the Angels 7-6. With Tim Wakefield and Steve Sparks as the starting pitchers, this was believed to be the 27th matchup of knuckleballers in history.
